Marcus French Rodney

Offered in partnership with The Marine Institute, this intensive 12-week workshop provides details instruction as you progress through each stage of building a 16’4″ rodney originally designed and built by Marcus French of Winterton, Trinity Bay. Join boat builder Jerome Canning twice a week to learn about traditional boat uses, designs and building techniques in Newfoundland and Labrador while actively constructing the backbone, placing moulds and battens, and shaping timbers and planks.

Pinhorn Family Sponsorship for a Student to Attend a 12-Week Boat Building Night Course January-March, 2026

Night Course Description

The Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador will be conducting a night course to teach the process of building a traditional Newfoundland punt. Offered in partnership with The Marine Institute, this intensive 12-week workshop provides detailed instruction as you progress through each stage of building a 15 foot Newfoundland punt originally designed and built in Winterton, Trinity Bay.

Join boat builder Jerome Canning twice a week to learn about traditional boat uses, designs and building techniques in Newfoundland. An overview of the program is included below.

Dates: January 08 – March 26, 2026

Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Eligibility for application for sponsorship:

• Full-time or Part-time post-secondary students.

• Commitment to in-person attendance for program delivery.

• Commitment to active in-class participation.

Pinhorn Family Student Sponsorship 2026 Winter Punt-Building Night Course Program Overview

Stage 1 - Introduction • Workshop overview • Safety • Use of hand tools, introduction to use of power tools

Stage 2 – Design • Punt design, parts, terminology • Review of full-scale loft boards • Review of templates developed from loft boards

Stage 3 – Work Area • Power tool certification • Build the construction platform and set up construction grids • Square and secure strongback

Stage 4 – Stem and Keel • Laminate the stem • Laminate dead wood to keel, shape rabbet line • Prepare the stern post • Cut key scarph in stem and keel • Prepare hog and apron • Join stem, keel, apron, hog and stern post

Stage 5 – Counter • Prepare counter planks • Biscuit-join and laminate counter blank • Rough cut counter • Put rough counter aside and install counter template on stern post for hull shaping

Stage 6 – Hull shape • Create construction moulds for principal frames • Temporary installation of moulds on keel • Temporary shaping battens between counter template, construction moulds, and stem • Install sheer batten to finish the shape of the hull.

Stage 7 – Frames • Using templates, laminate all juniper frames in the clamping jig • Cut outboard bevels before installation • Fit floors over port and starboard sides of each frame • Install frames • Cut inside bevels after planking has commenced Updated: November 21, 2025 3 Page: Pinhorn Family Student Sponsorship 2026 Winter Punt-Building Night Course

Stage 8 - Planking • When moulds and battens are in place, shape and install laminated counter • Estimate width of each plank at each timber using disappearing lines method • Cut garboard according to template • Cut shear plank according to batten on top • Scarph and plane planks to thickness after cutting • Spile all planks one side with a fair, measured line on other • Cut planks along spile lines using jig on table saw • Clamp shaped planks to frames and screw into place • Steam as required on ends of bottom planks

Stage 9 – Finishing • Shape and install breast hooks • Install risings and gunwales • Install thwarts.
